Downlights in a ceiling below a loft or another floor need to be fire-rated, so the holes don't weaken the ceiling's resistance to fire, and suitable for any insulation above them. Dimmers are matched to the LED lamps, so the lights don't flicker or buzz.
Outdoor and garden lighting needs fittings rated for the weather, cables protected from damage and RCD protection. Lights in a bathroom must suit the zone they're in. A new lighting circuit, or new lighting in a bathroom, is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England, and every job comes with the right certificate for the work.
The same engineers who work on our commercial jobs do the work at home, and you get a written price before any work starts. For a fault, that's once we've found the cause.
Everything is tested and certified when it's done. We're a NICEIC Approved Contractor, so we self-certify the work that building regulations say must be notified and tell building control for you.
If the ceiling separates two floors, or a room from the loft, the downlights should be fire-rated so the holes don't weaken the ceiling's resistance to fire. They also need to suit any insulation above them. We check the ceiling before choosing the fittings.
Usually because the dimmer isn't designed for LED lamps, or the lamps aren't dimmable. An LED-compatible dimmer or dimmable lamps normally fixes it. If they flicker without a dimmer, there may be a loose connection, which should be checked by an electrician.
