An old fuse board replaced with a modern consumer unit, with RCBO protection on each circuit.
Their quote for the replacement consumer unit was reasonable
We replace old fuse boards with modern consumer units, giving each circuit its own RCBO so a fault on one doesn't take out the rest.
Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England. Before the new one goes in, the existing circuits are tested, because modern protection picks up faults that old fuses ignored, and those need putting right first.
Under BS 7671, a consumer unit in a home must have a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means a metal one. With an RCBO on each circuit, a fault trips only that circuit rather than half the house, and surge protection is normally fitted at the same time. We'll tell you how long the power will be off before we start, and you get an Electrical Installation Certificate and a Building Regulations compliance certificate when it's done.
The same engineers who work on our commercial jobs do the work at home, and you get a written price before any work starts. For a fault, that's once we've found the cause.
Everything is tested and certified when it's done. We're a NICEIC Approved Contractor, so we self-certify the work that building regulations say must be notified and tell building control for you.
Yes, for the work that needs it. In England, new circuits, consumer unit replacements and some work in bathrooms are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NICEIC Approved Contractor we self-certify it: NICEIC tells your council's building control, and you get a Building Regulations compliance certificate.
Not always. The usual reasons are an old board with rewireable fuses or no RCD protection, or new circuits, such as an EV charger or an electric shower, that the old board can't take. An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) shows whether yours needs replacing.
Faults often show up when the circuits are tested for the new board, because RCDs trip on problems a fuse ignores. We tell you what we've found and agree any repairs with you before the new unit goes in.
